Study Excerpts
(Prof. Dr. Robert Petrella. University of Western Ontario)
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with 200 patients with knee osteoarthritis.
Comparison:
Double molecular weight of hyaluronic acid (RenehaVis)
– Low molecular weight of hyaluronic acid
– High molecular weight of hyaluronic acid
– Placebo
Treatment duration: 16 weeks.
Long-term observation: 104 weeks (2 years).
Effectiveness
Pain reduction under stress:
In a randomized study, RenehaVis shows a significantly greater reduction
in walking pain than mono-molecular hyaluronic acids.
Pain at rest:
RenehaVis reduced pain at rest significantly more than comparable hyaluronic acid preparations.
Onset of action and injection schedule:
The maximum therapeutic effect was achieved after the second injection.
With weekly injections, the effect remained stable until week 16.
Long-term effect – up to 2 years:
There was a sustained reduction in pain throughout the entire 2-year study period. Some patients did not require further treatment after 12 months.
Patient satisfaction:
Patients reported significantly higher satisfaction with the RenehaVis therapy compared to LMW and HMW-HA therapies.
Safety and compatibility
Very good tolerability, no relevant difference to placebo, and a tendency towards a lower need for concomitant medication.
Superior Clinical Efficacy.
The combination of low and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid
improves both lubrication and shock absorption – and showed superior clinical efficacy in this study.
